When seven students at Valhalla Academy unearth a secret message in the library, they discover that their uptight prep school used to be a sanctuary for trailblazing young women . . . until someone burned it to the ground.

Piecing together letters, journals, and yearbooks, the students must discover the cause of the fire - and the truth about their school’s history. As we follow both the optimistic students of 1919 and their jaded 2020 counterparts, The Code asks: how are we connected to those who came before us? And why is education so hard to get right?

Taking place in the school’s library over two different centuries, two intricately woven plots and a soaring pop score explore the ways in which the past and the present are forever intertwined, and how the truth connects us all. The Code features a diverse cast of characters in a suspenseful story about resilience, community, and yes, codebreaking.

Commissioned by American Conservatory Theater for their nationally-renowned Young Conservatory. The world premiere production took place August 4-7, 2022 at ACT’s The Strand Theater.
