When seven students at Valhalla Academy unearth a secret message in the library, they discover that their uptight prep school used to be a sanctuary for trailblazing young women . . . until someone burned it to the ground.

Sifting through letters, journals, and yearbooks, the students must discover the cause of the fire - and the truth about their school’s history. As we follow both the optimistic students of 1919 and their jaded 2020 counterparts, The Code asks: how can we keep fighting for justice when the world seems stacked against it?

Taking place in the school’s library over two different centuries, two intricately woven plots and a soaring pop score explore how the past and the present are forever intertwined and the ways truth connects us all. The Code features a diverse cast of characters in a suspenseful story about resilience, community, and yes, codebreaking.

Commissioned by American Conservatory Theater for their nationally-renowned Young Conservatory, the first workshop production took place August 4-7, 2022 at ACT’s The Strand Theater.
